We all know that parrots can mimic what we say, but I never thought my parrot, Mango, would end up repeating one of the most awkward moments of my life—my breakup conversation.
It all started a few months ago when my partner and I decided to end our relationship. It was a tough decision, and we had a long, emotional talk about it. We sat in the living room, trying to be calm and understanding, but it was still a difficult conversation. What I didn’t realize at the time was that Mango, my bright green parrot, was sitting quietly in his cage, listening to every word.
A few days after the breakup, I was still feeling a little down. I was sitting on the couch, trying to distract myself, when suddenly Mango started talking. At first, it was just random words and phrases, like he always does. But then, to my shock, he started repeating parts of my breakup conversation!

I couldn’t believe it. My parrot had memorized the entire conversation and was now replaying it for me. At first, I was mortified. How could Mango do this to me? But then, I started laughing. It was so absurd and unexpected that I couldn’t help but find it funny. Here was my parrot, trying to comfort me in his own weird way by repeating the words I had said just days before.
Over the next few weeks, Mango kept repeating bits and pieces of the conversation. At first, it was a little painful, but eventually, it became a running joke. Whenever I felt sad, Mango would chime in with his dramatic rendition of the breakup, and it would always make me smile. It was like he was reminding me that even though things were tough, life goes on, and sometimes you just have to laugh at the unexpected.
Looking back, I realize that Mango helped me get through a difficult time in a way I never expected. He turned a painful memory into something lighthearted and even a little silly. Now, whenever I hear him squawking, “It’s just not working,” I can’t help but laugh. It’s a reminder that even in tough moments, there’s always a little bit of humor to be found—especially when you have a parrot with a great memory!
